Sheep Ridge Farm

A 150-ewe flock raised on rotational grazing in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania. Freezer lambs, breeding stock and freezer pork.

Our story

It started with one pet sheep

In 1975, Dale McMillen's neighbor, Lonie Gebhart, gave him a pet sheep. More than fifty years later, that one sheep has grown into a working flock.

"Sheep Ridge Farm was established on July 22, 1975, with the gift of a pet sheep. From that humble beginning the farm has evolved into a 150 brood ewe flock with concentration on sustainability through rotational grazing, production-based genetics, and sound animal husbandry practices. Our emphasis centers on brood ewes and replacement ewe lambs that thrive under a rotational grazing system, and market lambs that achieve maximum weight gains putting them to market at a young desirable age to the consumer."

What we raise

Our sheep

We raise five breeds, chosen for strong mothering, good growth and how well they do on grass.

Horned Dorset ewe with her lambs
Breeds out of season

Horned Dorset

A white-faced breed known for breeding out of season, so lambs can come at more than one time of year. Good mothers with well-muscled lambs.

Polled Dorset sheep at the feeder
Easy to handle

Polled Dorset

The same strong Dorset traits without the horns. Easy to handle, with good milk and meaty lambs.

Tunis sheep grazing
Heritage breed

Tunis

One of America's oldest sheep breeds, easy to spot by its red-tan face and legs. Hardy and calm, with mild-flavored meat.

Polypay ewe with twin lambs in the barn
Lots of twins

Polypay

Developed in the U.S. for high lambing rates. Polypay ewes often raise twins and are a strong choice for building a flock.

Blackface cross ewe with black lambs
Fast growing

Blackface cross

Crossbred for fast growth and a good carcass. These are the lambs that reach market weight young.
